Leukemia, lymphoma (non and Hodgkins), myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are diseases that can affect the bone marrow, the blood cells, the lymph nodes and other parts of the lymphatic systems. An estimated combined total of 156,420 people in the US are expected to be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma this year.
• Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every 10 minutes someone dies.
Leukemia
• Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.
• In the US an estimated 327,520 people are living with, or are in remission from leukemia
• The relative five-year survival rate for patients with leukemia has nearly quadrupled in the last 49 years.
Lymphoma
• There are an estimated 761,659 people today living with lymphoma: 177,526 have or are in remission from Hodgkins lymphoma; 584,133 have or are in remission from non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL).
• The five-year relative survival rate for patients with Hodgkins lymphoma has more than doubled from 40 percent between 1960 and 1963, to almost 88 percent between 1999 and 2006.
• The five-year relative survival rate for NHL patients rose from 31 percent between 1960 and 1963, to just over 69 percent between 1999-2006.
Myeloma
• There are an estimated 192,144 people living with or in remission from myeloma in the US.
•The 5-year relative survival rate for multiple myeloma patients is approximately 60–62%. Survival has improved over time due to better treatments, with overall life expectancy for standard-risk patients now often exceeding 10 years.
